Objectives

 

 1. To provide participants with a general but practical knowledge of the claims &/or disputes that may arise or encounter in their work in engineering and design practice, building construction supervision, project management or in engineering management.

 

2. To enable participants to acquire and apply their knowledge of contract & commercial law to deal with, prepare, appraise, negotiate and settle engineering, building &/or construction claims they may encounter in their engineering practice or their work in project management and building construction supervision in the new economy.

 

3. To enable participants to participate through case discussions the techniques of dealing with construction, engineering &/or building claims through appraisal, negotiation and settlement of such claims.

2.  A review of the Law of Contract 

    . forms & formation of contract and the legal requirements of a valid contract

    . terms of a contract including condition, warranty, exclusion clauses, etc.

    . vitiating factors in contract & rescission

3.  Legal Aspects of Engineering, Construction & Building Contracts

     . types of contract viz. lump sum, bill of quantities, etc

     . differences between Engineering & Building contracts and others

     .standard form contracts

Speaker’s CV

Mr.Lee Kwok Weng, B.Eng. (Mech.)(S'pore), M.Sc.(Ind.Eng)(NUS), DipBA(NUS), GradDip Mktg.(MIS), LLB(Hons)(Bucks), LLM(Lond), Barrister-at-Law, Advocate & Solicitor (Retired), Supreme Court of Singapore, Accredited Arbitrator & Mediator, MMIS, FIES, Honorary Legal Advisor, IES & SISO, is a senior lawyer, was in continuous private legal practice for almost 29 years running his own law firm before his retirement from legal practice. 

 

He has been for many years an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Business Admin, National University of Singapore, teaching Business Law in the MBA programme  as well as an Adjunct Lecturer in NTU & BCA Academy.

 

He specialises in Business Contracts, Negligence, Information Technology and Engineering & Building Laws. He is a very experienced lecturer and trainer and is well-versed in the technical field, marketing and management practice too.

 

Mr.Lee brings with him considerable industrial project and business development management experience, having worked as a project engineer/manager for more than 12 years in the public & private sectors. Eventually, before he switched to the legal profession, he was a senior project manager in a leading Multi-national engineering and construction corporation serving the energy, marine, oil and gas industries onshore and offshore.

 

A knowledge hands-on practising lawyer himself, Mr.Lee also brings with him practical experience in managing & mitigating claims and claims litigation as well as a wealth of practical knowledge & experience of the legal requirements, setting & starting and managing businesses in the knowledge economy as he is a co-founder of and legal/corporate adviser to some IT/internet & other companies.
